MISHAWAKA — Children at Queen of Peace Catholic School made an unusual discovery Thursday night when they witnessed a two-headed turtle hatch in a field behind the school.
The children had been watching the eggs since the spring and recently had been checking every night to see if any of the eggs have hatched.
The children playfully named the turtle after twins "Phil and Lil" on the popular Nickelodeon show "Rugrats."
The turtle also has two tails and six legs.
"We screamed when I first saw it," said Maria Hite, an eighth-grader at the school. "We saw the heads, and he kind of scared us at first."
The other five turtles that hatched Thursday night will be released later today in a lagoon next to the school. School officials plan to call a veterinarian to get an opinion on how "Phil and Lil" should be properly cared for.
